Former Home Minister Umar Naseer has stated that murders and other matters were appropriately investigated during former President Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s tenure and that it is made more evident by the current government’s failure to find new details.
Regarding the Presidential Commission on Deaths and Disappearances (DDCom) accusing President Yameen of hindering the investigation into journalist Rilwan Abdulla’s disappearance, Umar claimed that the commission’s current efforts are futile as DDCom has no new investigations to conduct.
According to Umar, DDCom’s efforts are useless as there has been no stone left unturned. Rilwan’s case has been fully investigated and all evidence has been collected, he said. Dr. Afrasheem’s case has also been investigated to its full capacity during President Yameen’s regime.
“Therefore, there are no new investigations for the commission formed by this government. The government knows this. All the evidence for Rilwan’s case was collected and fully investigated. There is nothing new to be investigated”, said Umar.
Additionally, he criticized the government as it was elected by selling Rilwan’s case, which is extremely wrong. The former Home Minister falsified claims that President Yameen asked not to investigate Rilwan’s disappearance.
“Yameen was notified that about 80 police officers and soldiers had been for the trial. When we discussed deploying additional personnel, Yameen asked us not to be overwhelming. He never interfered with the investigation. It is absolutely false”, said Umar, regarding the claims.
“Anyone who doesn’t know the meaning of overwhelming needs to open a dictionary. Yameen never hindered the investigation”.
Further criticizing President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, Umar Naseer stated that Solih’s failure to make any progress for two years after crying on Rilwan’s mother’s shoulder and walking through Male’ holding the mother’s hand after being elected as President, proves that it was all talk. Umar claimed that it is now evident that the accusations he made against the former government during his campaign were false.
