Former Home Minister Umar Naseer has stated that former President and incumbent Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed prefers a monarchy.
When questioned regarding the ruling system of Maldives during an interview hosted on Clubhouse by Vaguthu News, Umar Naseer claimed that Nasheed is the only advocate for a parliamentary system. He added that Nasheed would rather enjoy a monarchy.
“He might be satisfied if appointed monarch and pampered”.
According to Umar, a presidential system is ideal for Maldives. He stated that the current system is extremely alike to a parliamentary system, and that the likeness has been increasing since former President Nasheed was appointed as Parliament Speaker. “I see a double state being formed in Maldives”, said Umar.
Additionally, he noted that the issue is not in the system and that the country needs clean, strong leaders to amend the political scene.
Umar has been expressing his intent to become an independent candidate for the 2023 presidential elections. He previously claimed he would participate in the 2018 elections, but failed to do so.
