MPL Unveils Plans for Cruise Terminals Across Maldives

Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has announced an initiative to develop cruise terminals in four key regions, enhancing the country's maritime tourism infrastructure. The project, part of MPL's master plan, aims to provide sustainable services for cruise liners, addressing the growing demand for proper facilities.
The terminals will be established in Ha. Uligamu, L. Fonadhoo, Addu City Hithadhoo, and Thilafushi. Research and Development Consultant Anil Adam shared on PSM News that feasibility studies, conducted by a Greek consultant, will conclude in January 2025, with construction expected to begin in the first quarter.
In Ha. Uligamu, MPL has already signed a development agreement with the local council. Plans for Thilafushi include repurposing areas following the relocation of Male’s commercial port, with consultations completed with the Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure.
Currently, large cruise vessels anchor near Male’ or outside lagoons due to inadequate terminal facilities. This development promises to distribute tourism benefits more equitably across the Maldives while providing modern amenities for operators and passengers.
