The Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) is currently in discussions with three foreign companies regarding the construction of the Thilafushi commercial port, although no decision has been made yet on who will handle the port operations. MPL CEO Mohamed Wajeeh Ibrahim revealed that the talks involve China Harbor Engineering Company, Dubai Port World of the UAE, and International Container Terminal Services (ICTS) of the Philippines.
Wajeeh clarified that while the construction of the port will be entrusted to one of these companies, MPL will retain operational control. "There are no discussions to hand over the operation to anyone," he stated.
The goal is to identify and sign a contract with the chosen company by next month, with each party currently negotiating the terms they prefer.
