Ali Shafiu and his family, jailed in Afghanistan, have been released. They were freed based on a review of their case following the Taliban takeover.
After their release, Shafiu provided an exclusive interview to Dhiyares. Shafiu went on a tour to Afghanistan in 2018. He was then arrested and has spent three years in numerous Afghan prisons.
He was issued a 22-year prison sentence in 2019. The sentence was then changed to 16 years. Shafiu was accused of being a member of the terror group Daesh.
Shafiu was freed after his case was revised in a Taliban court. The court decided that the family had not committed any crimes, and declared Shafiu and his family innocent.
Speaking to Dhiyares, Shafiu shared the details of his grueling time in prison. Dhiyares and the Maldives Journal will soon be reporting on his experiences.
