Former President and incumbent Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed believes India must broaden its role in Afghanistan.
In an interview with the Indian news outlet Times Now, Nasheed stated that India must expand its current role in Afghanistan, clarifying that expanding its role does not necessarily mean deploying troops.
However, he said that troops must be deployed if necessary. He further stated that establishing a political system and strengthening political parties in Afghanistan is most important. According to Nasheed, many political views and amendments to constitutional conventions must be introduced.
Nasheed warned that the international community must be cautious about working with the Taliban, as it is foolish to assume that the Taliban may have changed. He noted that the international community can instead work with former presidents and progressive people of Afghanistan.
The former president is not in support of the international community rushing to work with the Taliban and reiterated that he does not believe the Taliban government will be a good one.
India can play a strategic role in Afghanistan, and that India can find progressive Afghan communities to work with, said Nasheed.
