Former President Mohamed Nasheed has signaled his interest in contesting the 2028 presidential election. In a message shared with senior members of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Nasheed said, “I am considering running. What do you think? Whatever your answer, it won't affect our relationship.” He did not specify under which party he would run.
Nasheed, who currently serves as the Secretary General of the Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF), parted ways with the MDP in June 2023 following internal disputes with former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. He later joined The Democrats, a breakaway party formed by a group of MDP members.
As internal preparations for the 2028 elections gain momentum, several MDP figures have already positioned themselves as potential contenders. These include party Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail, former President Solih, former Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid, Malé City Mayor Adam Azim, and South Hulhumalé MP Dr. Ahmed Shamheed.
While Nasheed has expressed that a coalition between MDP and The Democrats would be the most beneficial for the country, the two parties have yet to establish formal political cooperation. Notably, some members who left MDP for The Democrats have since returned.
Nasheed’s statement comes as Solih has begun holding factional meetings within the MDP in anticipation of the upcoming presidential race.
