Nasheed Criticizes Former Government’s Land Allocation in Binveriyaa Scheme, Expresses Confidence in Reforms

Former President Mohamed Nasheed has alleged that the previous government unfairly compiled the land list under the Binveriyaa scheme. He expressed confidence that the new Managing Director of Housing Development Corporation (HDC), Mauroof Jameel, will reform operations following the ongoing police investigation.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Nasheed addressed recent allegations of Hulhumalé land allocations being granted to undeserving candidates. He claimed the earlier land lists were also unfair, a concern he had raised in the past. This new revelation, he said, only adds another layer to the issue of inequity.
Unlike before, the situation is now under active investigation, Nasheed said, pointing to changes in HDC’s management as a positive step. He stated his belief that the Maldives Police Service would conduct a thorough investigation and reiterated his trust in Mauroof Jameel's leadership to improve the corporation’s operations.
Currently, the entire HDC board, except for Chairman Ahmed Nasif (Didi), remains suspended as investigations into the Binveriyaa and Gedhoruveriyaa scheme fraud continue. Former Managing Director Fazul Rasheed resigned while under suspension, and an additional 15 HDC employees and 10 Housing Ministry staff have been dismissed to facilitate the probe.
Authorities have also seized the passports of some former Housing Ministry officials from the previous administration to prevent them from leaving the country as the investigation unfolds.
