Minister of Home Affairs Sheikh Imran Abdulla has responded to a statement from former President and incumbent Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed which insinuated that the state is being controlled by extremists behind the scenes.
Some members summoned to the Parliamentary Committee on National Security’s inquiry into the May 6 attack on former President Nasheed expressed great concern regarding the extent of extremism in the country.
Director-General of the National Counter Terrorism Centre Brigadier General Zakariyya Mansoor has claimed that extremism and extremist beliefs are in a deep state within the state.
When questioned by online media Adhadhu, Home Minister Imran stated that information from police intelligence and all reports from the investigation so far have not indicated any evidence of a deep state in Maldives.
Sheikh Imran then acknowledged the presence of extremist beliefs in Maldives. However, the minister reiterated that the actual scale of all matters must be considered.
He stated that any issues within the Maldives should not be exaggerated or forbidden by alternate means and that one must use a certain degree of discretion when comparing Maldives.
