Police have confirmed that the information regarding an assassination attempt on former President and incumbent Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed provided to Minister of Defense Mariya Didi by parliament representative for Hulhudhoo constituency Ilyas Labeeb was unrelated to the May 6 terror attack.
Supporters of former President Nasheed called for Mariya's resignation once the exchange between the minister and Ilyas Labeeb surfaced. The media revealed that Mariya claimed she received the information from Ilyas after police and defense forces denied the reception of such intel.
During a press conference on Saturday night, Assistant Commissioner of Police Mohamed Riyaz stated that no facts were derived from examining Ilyas' information. "We have not found any conclusive evidence or facts connecting the information to the acts of those involved in the attack", said Riyaz.
ACP Riyaz also stated there is no evidence suggesting the attack was funded. There is no proof suggesting that the perpetrators received funds to obtain the motorcycle and other materials needed for the attack, or that they received a financial reward for conducting the attack.
