Opposition Allied with Drug Lords to Topple Nasheed Administration: MP Labeeb

MP Ilyas Labeeb (Hulhudhoo) has alleged that the Nasheed administration was brought to an end by an alliance of the opposition and drug lords.
The opposition PNC/PPM coalition's Parliamentary Group leader, MP Adam Shareef (Maduvvaree) submitted a motion to the floor today regarding the issue of the courts allowing suspects accused of drug trafficking to go free. In the debate that ensued, MP Labeeb mentioned that the Nasheed administration had worked broadly to "shut the doors to drugs", and that former President Mohamed Nasheed had built several drug rehabilitation centres and detox centres in various regions of the country.
"[Presidents] Waheed and Yameen closed down the detox centres after coming to power after toppling the government in a coup. They shut down the rehabilitation centres. That's what they did after they toppled the government in a coup", said MP Labeeb.
Despite MP Labeeb's comments, no rehabilitation centres or detox centres had been closed down during the terms of either President Mohamed Waheed or President Yameen Abdul Gayyoom.
MP Labeeb said that six drug lords had been arrested and were under investigation, and the opposition at the time allied themselves with drug traffickers to overthrow the Nasheed administration.
MP Labeeb's comments on the Majlis floor today had never before been stated by the Maldivian Democratic Party, or others, as a reason that had lead former President Mohamed Nasheed to resign from the presidency on February 7, 2012. Former President Nasheed's party, the Maldivian Democratic Party, has consistently named several reasons, allies, and co-conspirators behind the incident of February 7.
The list of possible co-conspirators behind the February 7 incident as per the MDP, to date, are as follows:
1. Oil traders,
2. Resort owners,
3. Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom,
4. India,
5. Drug traffickers,
6. Violent religious extremists.
None of the MDP's claims in this regard have ever been backed by any proof. Many witnesses have reported that former President Nasheed had been drunk during the morning of February 7, 2012.
