A supervisor at Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) was dismissed for criticizing the government on social media.
Ismail Rasheed, based in Addu City, was accused of violating the company's code of conduct.
It was reported that he received a phone call notifying him of his discharge, wherein the caller elaborated on the reason for his dismissal.Â
The company representative then stated that they would only be able to provide a dismissal chit, which stated he was fired for a violation of the company's code of conduct.
Sources claim that the staff member received two letters of warning earlier in the year, as well as a 14-day suspension during Ramadan for the same reason. He was with the company for five years.
According to his peers, Ismail Rasheed was friendly and motivated, an exemplary employee.
Previously, a member of staff based in Hithadhoo was also laid off amist social media controversy.
