President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has expressed gratitude to everyone who contributed to the implementation of three major national initiatives that officially began today under the government’s policy framework.
The first initiative marks the enforcement of the amendment to the Tobacco Control Act, introduced by the government, which prohibits the sale and use of tobacco products by anyone born on or after January 1, 2007. With this milestone, the Maldives becomes the first country in the world to implement a generational tobacco ban, creating a smoke-free generation by law.
The second initiative is the commencement of the government’s policy to issue fishing permits for shark fishing under a regulated management plan. The measure aims to provide new economic opportunities for Maldivian fishermen while ensuring sustainable use of marine resources.
The third initiative involves the harmonization and increase of salaries across all sectors of the Civil Service, including local council staff and judiciary employees. The salary adjustment took effect today, aligning pay structures and improving compensation for government employees nationwide.
In a post on X, President Muizzu expressed his heartfelt thanks to all those who worked to bring these initiatives to fruition, as well as to every institution and individual who cooperated in making them a success.
