President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said 2027 will be a landmark year for development in the Maldives, with the majority of the government’s ongoing infrastructure projects expected to be completed during the year.
The President made the remarks during the sixth episode of the President’s Office podcast, The Pulse, which focused on infrastructure and development projects being implemented across the country. The episode featured senior journalist Ahmed Shujau of Avas Media as the participating journalist.
During the programme, President Muizzu responded to concerns raised by members of the public regarding delays in some development projects. He acknowledged that certain projects had progressed more slowly than anticipated, but said the government was working to overcome economic and other challenges and resume practical work without further delays.
The President said development projects have been scheduled according to different sectors and that some projects are expected to be completed even during 2028.
Highlighting the construction of modern council offices across the islands, President Muizzu said work on the project is expected to be completed around the middle of 2027, allowing the new facilities to become operational according to schedule. He further said that, over the following two years, around 100 island councils are expected to operate from newly constructed buildings.
The President also highlighted the economic and social benefits expected from improvements to the country's transport system and airport infrastructure. He said work on the Thila-Malé Bridge project is currently progressing at a faster pace and also provided details on development projects planned for Addu City.
President Muizzu said the relocation of the Malé Commercial Port to Thilafushi would be the largest project undertaken by his administration. He expressed confidence that the relocation would be completed by 11 November 2027.
The November 2027 deadline is consistent with the President's previously announced target for the relocation. The project is being implemented in phases by Maldives Ports Limited, with the new Thilafushi facility planned to include major quay infrastructure and supporting facilities.
The President has previously said the relocation is intended to improve cargo-handling efficiency, with unloading times expected to fall from as much as seven days at the existing Malé port to around 48 hours at the new facility.
