The Maldives and Pakistan have agreed to work towards increasing bilateral trade from USD 13.9 million to USD 200 million within the next two years, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced.
Sharif made the announcement following official talks during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s visit to Pakistan.
The Pakistani prime minister said current trade volumes did not reflect the strength of the countries’ longstanding and brotherly relations. With Muizzu’s full support, both sides had agreed to pursue a substantial expansion in trade to better match their economic potential, he said.
The target would represent an increase of more than fourteenfold from the current level.
Discussions also covered broader economic and technological cooperation. Sharif expressed Pakistan’s readiness to share technical expertise and experience to support efforts to establish data centres in the Maldives.
He also reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to providing training and assistance to Maldivians in healthcare, education and defence.
Muizzu and the First Lady travelled to Pakistan with a senior government delegation.
