President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has expressed confidence that assets and public funds lost through corruption can be recovered, saying the government is committed to pursuing stolen state resources and strengthening anti-corruption measures.
The President made the remarks during an appearance on PSM News' Nation Chat programme.
President Muizzu said eliminating corruption that has become embedded within the state system over many years remains one of the government's highest priorities. He stressed that meaningful progress can only be achieved through close cooperation between the government, the courts, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), and all relevant state institutions.
He also revealed that work is progressing on an Asset Recovery Bill, which is intended to provide a legal framework for recovering public funds and property lost through corruption.
"I believe we will be able to recover as much as possible—if not all—of the public money and assets that have been lost through corruption. This is a very difficult and significant undertaking," the President said.
Referring to major corruption cases such as the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) scandal, President Muizzu said the government's objective is to ensure every case is thoroughly examined and resolved fairly. He added that the administration also aims to reduce opportunities for corruption in the future by expanding the digitalisation of government services.
The President said the "Maldives 2.0" initiative is one of the government's most important reforms to combat corruption. According to him, the digital transformation programme will improve transparency and deliver faster, more efficient public services.
President Muizzu also said he expects these reforms to improve the Maldives' standing in international rankings, including the Corruption Perceptions Index and the Press Freedom Index.
