President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has affirmed that the Maldives will not permit any misuse of its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) or territory in ways that could threaten the peace and stability of the Indian Ocean region.
In an interview with Sri Lanka's The Ceylon Today, the President addressed questions regarding the entry of a Chinese research vessel into Maldivian waters, especially after the vessel was denied entry into Sri Lanka.
Responding to concerns, President Muizzu stated, “The Maldives will not allow any attempts to misuse this region in ways that could destabilize the peace and stability of the Indian Ocean.” He stressed that the decision was not made to oppose any specific nation, but was in line with preserving regional harmony and upholding the sovereignty of the Maldives.
The President emphasized that the Maldives remains committed to maintaining diplomatic relations with all countries in a balanced and respectful manner. He also underscored the Maldives' continued support for freedom of navigation, stating that foreign vessels are granted passage with due respect and equality.
“When we grant permission for foreign vessels to enter our territory, we always consider national interests and established principles,” President Muizzu said. He noted that such decisions are aligned with regional security concerns and international obligations.
He further revealed that under the same guiding principles, the Maldives has previously allowed entry to both American and Indian naval vessels. President Muizzu concluded by reaffirming that the Maldives will continue to be known for its hospitality and commitment to international norms.
