The Ministry of Tourism and Environment has announced that 565,890 trees have been planted to date under the Five Million Trees Program, a nationwide environmental initiative launched by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
According to the Ministry’s latest update, agreements have been signed with various organizations to plant a total of 6,331,100 trees as part of the project, surpassing the original five million target. This includes contributions from key partners across different sectors.
Tree Planting Pledges by Participating Parties:
- Rosewood: 1,478,244
- Housing Development Corporation (HDC): 1,000,000
- Maldives Ports Limited (MPL): 1,000,000
- SDM Farm: 750,000
- State Electric Company (STELCO): 600,000
- Road Development Corporation (RDC): 500,000
- Others: 1,002,856
Launched on World Environment Day, June 5, 2024, the Five Million Trees Program is part of the government’s broader environmental conservation effort aimed at restoring diminishing plant species, increasing national greenery, and maintaining ecological balance in the Maldives.
The program involves the planting of 90 different species of trees, including rare indigenous varieties, shade trees, and fruit-bearing species across various islands.
The Ministry emphasized that the initiative not only supports environmental preservation but also promotes sustainability and climate resilience through increased biodiversity and green cover.
