Vice President Latheef Calls for Forward-Thinking Climate Action at Hawaii Fellowship Launch

Vice President of the Maldives, Hussain Mohamed Latheef, has emphasized the need for proactive and forward-thinking strategies to tackle the worsening effects of climate change, especially for small island nations.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Blue Planet Alliance Fellowship Program in Honolulu, the Vice President said, "Climate disasters have become a reality for small island nations like the Maldives. To overcome them, we must think ahead of the current situation and find solutions that match the urgency of the crisis."
Despite ongoing challenges, the Vice President reiterated the Maldives’ commitment to climate action. He noted that the country has launched its third Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) and introduced the Energy Roadmap for 2024–2033. This roadmap aims to increase the use of renewable energy to 33% by 2028.
Highlighting the obstacles smaller countries face in productivity and innovation, the Vice President said the Blue Planet Alliance Fellowship Program offers an essential platform for collaboration. "This program allows policymakers and utility sector leaders from vulnerable nations to share knowledge and work together to find creative, sustainable solutions," he said.
