MET Warns of Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms Starting Tuesday

The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET) has issued a forecast predicting heavy rain and thunderstorms across the nation beginning Tuesday, April 8, 2025. The weather service detailed that showers and thunderstorms are expected to affect the central and northern atolls within the next 24 hours from Sunday, April 6, while the southern atolls are anticipated to experience generally better conditions during this period.

According to MET, winds over the next 24 hours will range from south to southwesterly in the southern atolls and west to southwesterly elsewhere, blowing at speeds of 3 to 13 miles per hour. The forecast also indicates that sea conditions will remain moderately calm, with wave heights between 1 and 3 feet. Despite the relatively tranquil seas, the MET office has urged the public to exercise caution, particularly when traveling by sea, given the impending adverse weather.

The warning comes as the Maldives braces for a shift in weather patterns, with the central and northern regions likely to bear the brunt of the showers and thunderstorms.
