Weather to worsen across Maldives in next 24 hours: MET

The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET Office) has forecast deteriorating weather conditions across all parts of the Maldives over the next 24 hours.

According to the MET Office, all regions of the country are expected to experience heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms. Although periods of intense rain are forecast, sea conditions are expected to remain generally moderate. However, strong winds are also expected.

The MET Office further warned that there is a high possibility of wave surges during periods of high tide. It noted that wave surge impacts are already being observed in different parts of the country, with the primary reason being the development of large weather systems some distance away from the Maldives.

Regarding the movement of these weather systems, the MET Office said that the system to the east of the Maldives is moving southwards, while the system to the west is moving towards the southwest. As both systems strengthen in areas near the Maldives, the risk of wave surges is expected to increase.

As wave surges may coincide with high tide, the MET Office has urged the public to take extra precautions to secure vessels moored in harbours, boats pulled ashore, and other equipment or property that could be affected.
