President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that construction of the Ihavandhoo Fisheries Complex in Ha. Atoll will commence in May 2024, following the completion of administrative and technical preparations.
Speaking during a meeting with Ihavandhoo residents as part of his visit to the island, President Dr. Muizzu emphasized the island’s significance in the fishing industry. He outlined that the project, which will be carried out in phases, includes the development of a 1,000-ton cold storage facility, a 50-ton brine freezing facility, an office building, a powerhouse, a vehicle workshop, a warehouse, a 130-meter jetty, and a 3.5-meter deep harbour.
The MVR 416 million project is expected to be completed within 18 months and will create over 100 job opportunities in the region.
To mark the commencement of the project, a foundation-laying ceremony was held today, attended by Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources Ahmed Shiyam, Ihavandhoo Council President Ahmed Sobah, and Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) CEO Dr. Vitaly Lyubimov.
The Ihavandhoo Fisheries Complex is part of the administration’s broader initiative to strengthen the Maldives' fisheries sector, improve fish processing and storage capacity, and boost economic opportunities for local fishermen.
