Maldives Immigration has detained thirteen undocumented foreign workers following a raid on an unsanitary food establishment in Malé. The operation, conducted on January 23 at a Café, revealed hazardous food preparation practices that posed significant risks to public health.
According to authorities, the detained individuals were found working without valid documentation. Video footage released by Immigration showed multiple foreign nationals preparing food in unsanitary conditions, raising concerns about hygiene standards and consumer safety. Officials have emphasized that such violations not only threaten public health but also highlight broader issues related to unregulated employment in the country.
This raid is part of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s broader efforts to regulate the foreign workforce and improve immigration control. Within the administration’s first year, nearly 5,000 undocumented workers have been repatriated as part of this initiative. Immigration Watch has been conducting intelligence-led operations targeting visa overstayers and foreigners involved in illegal activities, ensuring compliance with immigration laws.
In addition to enforcement actions, the government has launched a biometric data collection program for foreign residents. This initiative, introduced under President Muizzu’s directive, aims to enhance oversight and streamline workforce regulation. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to strengthening immigration control, protecting public safety, and addressing illegal employment practices through coordinated efforts.
