Maldivian authorities have announced that measures will be taken against locals who aid illegal expatriate-run businesses in the country. Controller General of Immigration Ahmed Faseeh made the statement as part of the government’s ongoing national operation to locate and take action against undocumented expatriates.
Faseeh revealed that a significant number of unauthorized businesses have been identified across the Maldives, including enterprises operating under the cover of Maldivian involvement. “There are areas where businesses have been infiltrated and taken over by expatriates. This operation is not straightforward. Influential individuals and business leaders are behind this situation. We will be successful if we approach this matter with diligence,” he said.
The operation, initiated under President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s directives, is being jointly carried out by immigration and police officers. Assistant Commissioner of Police Mohamed Dawood explained that the campaign will be rolled out in three phases:
- The first phase will focus on the Malé area.
- The second phase will extend to larger, more economically active islands.
- The final phase will target smaller inhabited islands.
Authorities have stated that the main objective of the operation is to safeguard public health, strengthen community safety, and curb illegal economic activity. Both undocumented expatriates and Maldivians who assist them will face strict action under the program.
