The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has fined Emerald Resort Private Limited MVR 20,000 for conducting expansion works at Olhuveli Beach and Spa Resort without completing the mandatory Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process.
An investigation by the EPA revealed that the company violated environmental regulations under the Environmental Protection Act and Preservation Act (4/93). The fine was issued on December 11, 2024, and the company has since settled the penalty in full.
The EPA has emphasized the importance of adhering to the EIA process for all development projects. It advised Emerald Resort Private Limited to ensure compliance with the necessary environmental regulations for any future initiatives.
The EPA operates under the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy and is tasked with protecting, conserving, and managing the environment and biodiversity of the Maldives.
