EPA Warns Against Unauthorized Use of Dredging Equipment in Sand Mining Areas

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has issued a strong warning against the unauthorized use of dredging equipment in sand mining areas designated for public use, emphasizing the need to complete a proper Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) before such activities.
This announcement comes in response to numerous complaints of unregulated dredging in various parts of the Maldives. The EPA highlighted that these sand mining zones are strictly reserved for essential public purposes, and the use of machinery, including dredging equipment, is prohibited unless authorized through the EIA process.
The agency expressed concern over reports of large-scale sand extraction using dredging equipment in violation of regulations. It reiterated that all atolls have designated sand mining areas where machinery is not permitted without an approved environmental impact report. This process requires collaboration with Atoll Councils and other relevant government agencies to ensure sustainable practices.
Local councils play a pivotal role in regulating sand mining, as they are authorized by the EPA to manage and supply sand for public needs from designated zones. The EPA has urged the public to adhere to these guidelines and warned of strict penalties for non-compliance.
By tightening regulations and enhancing oversight, the EPA aims to mitigate environmental damage caused by unregulated dredging near islands and promote sustainable resource use.
