The Maldives Ministry of Environment has officially opened membership applications for the Advisory Committee on the Protection and Maintenance of the South Ari Marine Park, emphasising community participation in safeguarding this unique marine ecosystem.
The South Ari Marine Park, declared a protected area on July 11, 2019, under Section 4 of the Maldives Environmental Protection Act, spans a 1-km stretch from the northwest corner of Rangali Faru in South Ari Atoll to the north end of Dhigurah. Renowned for its year-round whale shark presence and diverse marine resources, it is a critical site for marine conservation.
The advisory committee will include members from five representation groups:
- Representatives from resorts operating in the area
- Representatives from guest houses or dive centers
- A person from a local NGO active in the region
- A fisheries representative
- A liveaboard operator representative
Committee members will provide guidance on the park's management, address operational issues, and oversee special events in the area. They will also advise on charging practices for the use of the park’s resources. Notably, the role does not include financial compensation, reflecting its focus on community-driven conservation efforts.
Applications must be submitted to the Ministry by 2 PM on December 1. The initiative aims to strengthen collaborative stewardship to ensure the sustainable preservation of the South Ari Marine Park's natural wealth.
