Modern tech gear handed over to South Ari Atoll marine rangers

Modern technology equipment for monitoring the South Ari Atoll Marine Protected Area has been handed over to local rangers under the Tech4Nature Maldives project, the Environment Ministry said.
The initiative aims to strengthen management of the protected area, known as SAMPA, by equipping rangers with contemporary tools.
In addition to the equipment handover, practical training sessions on how to use the gear are currently underway, the ministry said. The training is designed to familiarize rangers with the equipment and improve the effectiveness of field operations.
Expanding monitoring capacity through technology is expected to significantly boost efforts to protect the local manta ray population, which faces extinction risks at a global level, according to the ministry.
The Tech4Nature project is funded by Chinese technology company Huawei and implemented jointly by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the Environment Ministry.
Officials described the work as part of the government’s broader policy to use modern tools for environmental protection, with a particular focus on safeguarding marine life.
