Over 1.83 Million Trees Planted Under Maldives’ Five Million Trees Programme

More than 1.83 million trees have been planted so far under President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s Five Million Trees Planting Programme, according to figures from the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy.
The ministry said a total of 1,830,618 trees have been planted under the programme to date, equivalent to approximately 37 percent of the programme’s original five-million-tree target. More than 600,000 trees have been planted so far this year, while the government has set a target of planting one million trees during 2026.
Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy Ali Shareef said he was confident the government would achieve the President’s target of planting one million trees before the end of the year.
The programme places particular emphasis on propagating and planting 90 tree species that are declining in the Maldives, including fruit-bearing trees, garden plants, large shade-providing trees and medicinal plants.
As part of efforts to expand the programme, work is also underway to develop a 55,000-square-foot modern “Green Nursery” in Hulhumalé with grant assistance from the Chinese government. The facility will include a laboratory, training rooms and a greenhouse. The nursery is intended to support the cultivation and distribution of plants while also strengthening technical capacity for nursery management.
The government has also provided financial assistance to 20 islands to establish nurseries, with each island receiving a grant of MVR 500,000. The 20 islands are:

The Ministry previously confirmed that the nursery initiative was being expanded to 20 islands, with the first 10 islands supported in the initial phase and a further 10 islands added in the second phase.
Several institutions and companies have also pledged to support the programme. These include Rosewood with 1,478,244 trees, HDC with 1,002,856 trees, MACL with one million trees, MTCC with one million trees, SDM Farm with 750,000 trees, and STELCO with 500,000 trees.
The Five Million Trees Planting Programme was officially inaugurated by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and First Lady Sajidha Mohamed at Lonuziyaarai Park on June 5, 2024, marking World Environment Day. The programme was first announced by President Muizzu at COP28 in December 2023.
The programme currently has an overall planting target of 5,859,394 trees. With 1,830,618 already planted, 4,028,776 trees remain to be planted to meet the current target.
