The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has condemned statements made by the opposition Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) that encourage violence.
In a press release, HRCM stated that videos have surfaced showing individuals affiliated with the MDP making statements at recent events that incite hatred and promote violence among the public.
The commission emphasized that while Article 27 of the Constitution guarantees the right to freedom of expression, including the right to express thoughts and opinions through speech, writing, and other means provided it does not contradict the tenets of Islam this right must be exercised responsibly and within certain limits to respect the rights of others.
HRCM further noted that expressions made at political gatherings, through media, or on social platforms that incite hatred, disrupt social harmony, or encourage violence go against the spirit of the constitutional right to freedom of expression.
“Such acts are deeply concerning to this commission. We strongly condemn these actions and urge political parties and their leaders to avoid such comments,” the statement said.
The commission also called on political parties to prioritize respect for human dignity and refrain from acts that incite unrest, harm, or promote violence. HRCM stressed the importance of organizing political activities in ways that uphold public interest and avoid disruptions to social peace.
