Flat List Issue to be Looked at From Human Rights Perspective: HRCM

The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has started investigating the list of recipients of flats allocated under the previous government's Housing Scheme from a human rights perspective.
The commission began its probe into the householder scheme after the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) investigated the matter and revealed numerous problems or irregularities with a majority of forms.
The commission said in a statement yesterday that it is investigating the case from a human rights perspective. The commission has met the Housing Ministry and the ACC on several occasions to look into the matter.
The Housing Ministry has assured that the existing list will not be canceled and no re-selection period will be announced. The ministry has now sought advice from the Attorney General’s Office on how to proceed with the ACC’s decision after the investigation, the HRCM said in a statement.
The HRCM has requested further clarification in writing to further investigate the matter. Further meetings are planned on the issue, the commission said.
The Commission has assured that it is working to resolve the issue as soon as possible as it is a matter of concern to the people.
After investigating the list of 4,000 flat recipients, the ACC said close to 60 per cent of the beneficiaries were ineligible under the rules of the flat ownership scheme based on the information contained in their submitted forms.
The previous government said that the flat ownership scheme administrators would visit people's residences to assess their living conditions before giving them points, however this was not done for the most part.
