HRCM Investigates Death of Zakiyya Moosa Amid Ongoing Public Outcry
The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has launched an investigation into the death of Zakiyya Moosa, who was found dead with neck injuries in Noonu Atoll Holhudhoo on September 10, 2023.
In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), HRCM confirmed it is reviewing concerns raised by Zakiyya’s family and assessing the actions taken by relevant authorities in the case. The commission has also obtained case-related documents from the Maldives Police Service.
Despite five months passing since her death, no arrests have been made, leading to continued public outrage on the island. Protests intensified last night, with demonstrators entering the Holhudhoo police station, demanding the arrest of Zakiyya’s husband and three other family members.
In December, Police Chief Inspector Mohamed Samih stated that Zakiyya died from neck injuries, including multiple deep wounds. However, police claimed no evidence indicated that the injuries were inflicted by another person.
Last month, authorities confirmed they had sought assistance from the FBI to aid in the investigation, following similar collaborations in previous high-profile cases in the Maldives.
