Fuel at subsidized State Trading Organization (STO) rates will be available to fishermen in the Maldives starting tomorrow, from four designated islands, according to President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. This announcement accelerates the timeline of the government’s "Fuel Storages" project aimed at providing affordable fuel across the nation.
Speaking at a ceremony in K. Gaafaru, President Muizzu highlighted the significance of ensuring fuel availability at basic rates for fishermen and the broader public. Initially, the project had planned to establish fuel availability in at least one island per atoll by implementing monthly rollouts through 2024. However, the government expedited the initiative, enabling operations to begin earlier than anticipated.
"Starting tomorrow, fuel will be accessible to fishermen at STO rates from FSM (Fuel Supply Maldives) sites in Hinnavaru, Kooddoo, Felivaru, and Addu City Hulhumedhoo. Additionally, arrangements have been made for MIFCO (Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company) vessels to provide fuel at STO rates in Kooddoo and Felivaru," President Muizzu stated.
The project, inaugurated on November 7, aims to establish a reliable network of fuel storage facilities across the Maldives. President Muizzu emphasized that the initiative is one of his administration’s top priorities, particularly in regions where fishermen face urgent needs for affordable fuel access.
Delivering on his presidential pledge to classify fuel as an essential service, Dr. Muizzu’s administration plans to ensure that petrol and diesel are obtainable at STO rates on at least one island in every atoll. By February 2026, fuel storage facilities are set to be operational in 19 islands, significantly reducing costs for fishermen and easing fuel access for the general public.
