Maldivian authorities intercepted a Sri Lankan fishing vessel carrying a massive narcotics shipment valued at RF 1 billion in the country’s territorial waters. The operation was announced at a press briefing held at Iskandharu Koshi, with Police Commissioner Ali Shuja providing details of the seizure.
The Sri Lankan fishing boat was intercepted by the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Coast Guard around 12:45 a.m. near Makunudhoo, following a tip-off. The vessel, carrying five Sri Lankan nationals, was escorted to Kulhudhuffushi port, where a joint operation by the Kulhudhuffushi City Police and Coast Guard led to a detailed search.
At approximately 9:30 a.m., the search revealed 468.6 kg of suspected narcotics on board. Preliminary tests identified the drugs as 344 kg of methamphetamine and 124.6 kg of cocaine. According to Commissioner Shuja, the street value of the seized drugs is estimated at RF 1 billion.
When questioned about potential links to domestic drug networks, Commissioner Shujau stated that it was too early to confirm any connections. He assured the public that the investigation, led by the Police’s Drug Enforcement Unit and Kulhudhuffushi City Police Station, is ongoing.
The operation highlights the Maldives' commitment to tackling drug trafficking in the region. This significant bust also emphasises the growing challenges posed by transnational drug trafficking networks exploiting the nation's maritime borders.
Efforts to combat the illegal drug trade have intensified in the Maldives in recent years, with authorities strengthening cooperation between police, military, and international partners to ensure the safety and security of the region.
