The Ministry of Housing and Urban Development has announced a list of seven islands selected for transformation into urban centres, as part of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s vision to promote balanced development across all regions of the Maldives. This initiative forms a central pillar of the President’s pledge to enhance living standards and access to essential services nationwide.
The selected islands are Ungoofaaru (Raa Atoll), Eydhafushi (Baa Atoll), Naifaru (Lhaviyani Atoll), Mahibadhoo (Alif Dhaalu Atoll), Nilandhoo (Faafu Atoll), Kudahuvadhoo (Dhaalu Atoll), and Fonadhoo (Laamu Atoll). These urban centres will be developed in three tiers, aiming to provide citizens in each region with essential services, high-quality housing, and improved infrastructure, reducing the need to travel to the capital, Malé.
President Muizzu expressed that these urban centres will enhance service delivery across all sectors, consistent with the government’s long-term master plan for sustainable development. In support of this effort, an Urban Development Bill has been introduced in Parliament to facilitate these projects.
The initiative aligns with the broader goals of creating major infrastructure projects that foster economic growth and provide residents of smaller islands with the option to voluntarily relocate to better-equipped urban centres. This ambitious program highlights President Muizzu’s commitment to expanding opportunities and uplifting communities throughout the Maldives.
