The Maldives Police Service has seized drugs valued at MVR 328 million in the 11 months since the start of the current administration, according to Police Commissioner Ali Shujau. Speaking at a press conference organized by the Ministry of Homeland Security, Shujau disclosed that since November 17 last year, authorities have confiscated 8,300 bottles of alcohol and 177 kilograms of drugs in various operations.
Shujau highlighted that the Maldives Police Service has conducted 155 drug-related operations across the capital Male’ and the atolls, with more than 12,000 locations searched. These efforts led to the arrest of over 900 individuals, including 145 foreigners who were handed over to immigration authorities for further action.
The Commissioner also stated that 365 drug-related cases have been investigated and sent to the Prosecutor General’s Office for prosecution. The operations, aimed at addressing the country's ongoing drug problem, reflect the police department’s commitment to combatting the menace of drugs in the Maldives.
Shujau reaffirmed the Maldives Police Service’s dedication to finding a lasting solution to the nation's drug crisis, underscoring the ongoing efforts to dismantle drug networks and prosecute those involved in the illegal trade.
