Commissioner of Police Ali Shuja revealed that 48 police personnel have been disciplined, and 17 have been dismissed from service so far in 2024, as part of efforts to maintain professional standards within the force. The announcement came during a press conference held at the President's Office, where CP Shuja discussed the police's approach to handling internal investigations and complaints.
Shuja stated that while it is typically against protocol to publicly disclose ongoing investigations involving police officers, the Maldives Police Service has now decided to share more information with the media about cases filed against police personnel. He emphasized that this decision aims to enhance transparency regarding police accountability and that the media will receive regular updates on complaints lodged against officers.
"Of the 48 officers against whom action has been taken this year, 17 have been dismissed from service as part of the police's commitment to uphold professional standards," Shuja said, adding that the internal disciplinary process will continue rigorously.
The Commissioner also noted that complaints related to police personnel will be addressed with the same level of scrutiny as other cases, promising that details of these investigations will be shared with the public moving forward.
