Maldivian Killed in Accident at Velana International Airport

A tragic accident occurred at Velana International Airport (VIA) on Tuesday morning, resulting in the death of a 45-year-old local man. The incident happened around 9:30 a.m. when a vehicle transporting airport luggage collided with a pole equipped with lights and cameras installed on the apron of the runway.

According to the Maldives Police Service, the driver sustained critical injuries in the accident and was initially rushed to the airport clinic for emergency medical care. Despite efforts by medical staff, the driver was later transferred to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

While police confirmed that there were no visible external injuries on the body, further investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances of the crash. Authorities are also examining the condition of the vehicle and the area where the accident took place as part of the ongoing investigation.
