Japan's New Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba Pledges to Deepen Ties with Maldives

Japan’s newly sworn-in Prime Minister, Shigeru Ishiba, has expressed his readiness to further deepen the longstanding cultural and diplomatic friendship between Japan and the Maldives. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Ishiba responded to a congratulatory message from President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, stating his eagerness to work closely with the Maldivian government to enhance bilateral relations under the framework of Japan’s 'Free and Open Indo-Pacific Strategy.'
Ishiba's remarks follow his recent swearing-in as the 102nd Prime Minister of Japan, succeeding Fumio Kishida, who stepped down earlier this year. Ishiba, a former Defense Minister and a senior member of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), secured the leadership position after winning the internal party election.
As Japan continues to maintain its strategic presence in the Indo-Pacific, Ishiba's commitment to fostering closer ties with the Maldives is expected to further solidify cooperation between the two nations. The 'Free and Open Indo-Pacific Strategy' has been a cornerstone of Japan’s foreign policy, promoting peace, stability, and economic growth through strengthened partnerships in the region.
