President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu of the Maldives has called for Israel to be held accountable for what he described as ongoing terrorist acts in Gaza and Lebanon, during his address at the United Nations General Assembly. Emphasizing the need for global action, President Muizzu urged world leaders to hold Israel accountable for its violations against Palestinians, condemning the destruction of civilian infrastructure and the targeting of innocent lives.
President Muizzu highlighted the systematic destruction carried out by Israeli forces, including the demolition of homes, hospitals, and schools, which he described as ethnic cleansing. “Men, women, and children are being martyred. Thousands of civilians have been killed in Gaza, and Israel is now targeting Lebanon as well,” he stated, adding that these scenes would evoke tears in anyone who values humanity.
The President also criticized Israel’s assaults on journalists, specifically highlighting attacks on Al Jazeera, which he described as efforts to silence those revealing the reality of the situation. President Muizzu underscored the Maldives' historical support for Palestinian rights, reaffirming the nation’s long-standing call for the recognition of Palestine's independence based on the 1967 borders, with Jerusalem as its capital.
Dr. Muizzu further advocated for the Palestinian Authority to be granted permanent membership in the United Nations. "Palestinians deserve a voice and a seat at the table of the world’s most important multilateral forum," he asserted.
Prior to his UN speech, President Muizzu met with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, reaffirming the Maldives' commitment to supporting Palestinian independence. He assured President Abbas of continued Maldivian advocacy for Palestinian rights on the international stage.
President Muizzu’s remarks come at a critical time, as international scrutiny intensifies over Israel’s actions in Gaza and its impact on regional stability.
