President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has reiterated the Maldives’ commitment to prioritizing preventive health measures, especially in the fight against tobacco use.
In a statement shared on social media to mark World No Tobacco Day, President Muizzu emphasized the importance of taking action before illness strikes. He highlighted several significant steps taken by the government to protect future generations from the harmful effects of tobacco.
Among these measures are the nationwide ban on the import and use of vape products and the prohibition of tobacco sales to individuals under the age of 21.
Notably, with recent amendments to the Tobacco Control Act, the Maldives has banned tobacco use for those born on or after January 1, 2007, starting this November. President Muizzu urged the public to view these changes as vital efforts toward securing a healthier and tobacco-free future.
In recognition of these anti-tobacco initiatives, the World Health Organization (WHO) presented President Muizzu with a special award, applauding his administration's proactive stance in curbing tobacco use in the country.
