President Dr Mohamed Muizzu is set to become the first Maldivian leader to address a United Nations Security Council debate, the President's Office has confirmed. Spokesperson Heena Waleed announced that the president will attend the 79th session of the UN General Assembly and is scheduled to participate in side events, including speaking engagements at Princeton University and the Summit of the Future, which will take place alongside the General Assembly.
While no official departure date has been confirmed, Heena stated that President Muizzu will address both the UN General Assembly and the Security Council debate during his visit to New York this month. This marks a historic moment for the Maldives, as it will be the first time a Maldivian president has spoken in a Security Council debate.
President Muizzu’s agenda also includes attending several key meetings and delivering remarks at side events aimed at discussing future global security and development strategies. His participation in the Summit of the Future reflects his focus on international collaboration and innovation.
The UN Security Council is widely regarded as the most powerful body of the United Nations, comprising five permanent members: the United States, Russia, China, the United Kingdom, and France.
This visit follows President Muizzu’s recent trip to The Hague, signalling his increasing involvement on the global diplomatic stage since taking office.
