President Muizzu: Islam Must Be the Foundation of Democratic Governance

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has emphasized the importance of grounding the country’s democratic governance in Islamic principles and indigenous values. In a post shared on X to mark International Day of Democracy, President Muizzu stated that the nation's democratic system should align with Islamic values, reflecting the cultural and religious heritage of the Maldivian people.
He underscored the significance of upholding free expression, civic rights, and the rule of law as essential components of democracy, reiterating that these ideals must be rooted in the country's Islamic traditions.
International Day of Democracy, observed annually on September 15, highlights the global importance of democratic governance. This year, the United Nations focused on how artificial intelligence (AI) can be leveraged to enhance good governance. The day also holds special significance for the Maldives, as democracy was first introduced in the country in 2008, when the first presidential election under democratic principles was held.
President Muizzu’s remarks come at a time when the country is reflecting on its democratic journey, which began with the pivotal elections of 2008.
