Stelco and the Maldives National University (MNU) have signed a memorandum of understanding to conduct a comprehensive scientific study on electricity consumption, aiming to address the issue of high electricity bills.
The MoU focuses on studying the root causes of billing problems, identifying consumption patterns, assessing the impact of climate change, and developing initiatives to enhance transparency, accuracy, and customer satisfaction in the billing system. The study will analyze data from the past decade (2014 to 2024).
The primary objectives outlined by Stelco include understanding consumption patterns across residential, commercial, and industrial categories, identifying peak consumption times, ensuring billing accuracy, and pinpointing opportunities for improved energy efficiency and cost reduction. Additionally, the study aims to identify and quantify billing errors, gather customer complaints, and provide research-based advice to support Stelco's strategic decision-making.
The longstanding issue of abnormally high electricity bills has been a consistent public concern, with frequent complaints from consumers.
