Maldives Government Announces New Schedule for Garbage and Goods Pickup to Alleviate Traffic Congestion

In an effort to mitigate vehicle congestion in the city, the Maldives government has announced new schedules for garbage and goods pickup, effective August 1st. This change is a key component of the Malefahi project aimed at improving traffic flow in Malé.
The new regulations will set specific hours for the transportation of goods by larger vehicles, limiting their operations to the hours between 8 pm and 5 am. This measure is designed to prevent road closures during peak school and office hours caused by unscheduled goods transportation.
The Ministry of Economic Development and Trade will oversee the implementation of this new schedule for goods transportation. Minister of Economic Development, Fayyaz Ismail, stated, "This initiative is crucial to reducing traffic disruptions in our city. By regulating the hours for larger vehicles, we aim to ensure smoother traffic flow and less inconvenience for residents."
In tandem with the changes to goods transportation, the government will also revise the garbage collection schedule. Effective from August 1st, garbage collection will occur from 10 pm to 5 am nightly. The Ministry of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy will supervise this transition.
Minister of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy, Thoriq Ibrahim, emphasized the importance of this initiative, saying, "Adjusting the garbage collection hours is a strategic move to decrease daytime road blockages and enhance the cleanliness and efficiency of waste management in Malé."
Both changes are scheduled to be fully implemented within the next six months, reflecting the government's commitment to improving urban infrastructure and addressing the growing concerns of traffic congestion and environmental management.
The Malefahi project, which includes these new pickup schedules, represents a broader effort to modernize Malé's urban planning and enhance the quality of life for its residents. The government continues to explore and implement innovative solutions to the city's traffic and environmental challenges.
These changes are expected to significantly alleviate traffic congestion, making daily commutes smoother and more predictable for the residents of Malé. The initiative underscores the government's proactive approach in tackling urban issues through thoughtful planning and strategic interventions.
