On Wednesday, the 20th People's Majilis rejected the amendment bill to the Land Acquisition Act, 2019, which was initially proposed by the 19th Parliament. The amendment required that land be handed over within three months of publishing the list of beneficiaries.
President Mohamed Muizzu had sent the amendment bill back to Parliament for reconsideration, seeking changes made by the previous legislative session. The proposal to refer the 9th Amendment Bill to the Maldives Land Acquisition Act to the National Development and Heritage Committee for further amendment, put forth by Hanimaadhoo MP Abdul Ghafoor Moosa, was voted in favour by twelve lawmakers.
Out of the 88 lawmakers who participated in the vote, 76 voted against passing the bill without changes. Consequently, only 12 members supported the bill, leading to its rejection.
