The government will begin work this month to end indefinite detention for people arrested while under investigation and awaiting trial, President Dr. Muizzu said in his first presidential statement.
The President said one of the government's biggest policies in formulating laws is to reduce crime and rehabilitate offenders. He also said that the prisons should be modernized by reducing the rate of imprisonment and punishment.
The President said he had made a presidential election promise to end indefinite detention in the investigation of various crimes.
The President said he would start working to bring it to an end this month and would propose amendments to the law during the upcoming session of Parliament.
