Former Deputy Speaker of the Parliament Moosa Manik (Reeko Moosa)’s debt owed to the national airline of the Maldives, Maldivian, has exceeded the million dollar mark.
TMJ has learned that Reeko Moosa now owes Maldivian over USD 1 million (MVR 30 million).
The payable was created when Rahaa Resort resort took tickets on credit. While the outstanding debt was at USD 500,000 this May, Maldivian has continued to issue tickets to the resort on credit.
According to the official from Maldivian, who once spoke to TMJ, despite the recovery efforts, so far, Rahaa Resort has effectively evaded repayment.
When Reeko learned that TMJ reached out to Maldivian for a comment when we learned of the owed payments, he called TMJ and made threats.
In his call to TMJ he said that he was a fluent speaker and no one stood a chance against him if he decided to go after them. Making the case for his threat, Reeko said that TMJ must know of what happened to both former Presidents, President Maumoon Abdul Qayyoom and President Mohamed Nasheed when he stood against them.
In addition to the payments owed to Maldivian, Reeko is currently in default for now paying for a USD 11 million loan financed by Bank of Maldives. Reeko’s Rahaa Resort is also behind on payments to the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA).
“Coincidentally”, Reeko has decided to rejoin the main-ruling party, MDP, at a time when he and his businesses have millions pending in repayments to the state. Reeko renewed his allegiance with MDP at a ceremony held at Muleeaage, in front of the President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, causing people to speculate that the root cause for Reeko’s change of heart was purely self-serving.
