Qasim Angered by Questions Regarding Him Seeking Compensation from Govt

Leader of the coalition’s Jumhooree Party Qasim Ibrahim was furious when questioned about the millions he is seeking from the government as compensation.
During the press conference held at the party’s office on Monday, Dhiyares posed a question regarding the millions he is seeking from the government as compensation for reclaiming the uninhabited islands that Qasim acquired for resort development as they have remained undeveloped for years. Dhiyares also highlighted that the public has accused the Jumhooree Party Leader of stealing the richness of several Maldivian generations through political deals. When asked what he can do for the people, Qasim claimed that the question was too personal.
Qasim asked the reporter what benefit speaking of such matters will provide.
“Asking specific set questions in a specific way will not make this flower bloom”, he said.
He reiterated that he did not obtain the numerous reefs, islands, and plots of land unjustly. Qasim then refused to provide the opportunity to ask further questions.
It is noteworthy that the islands and land given to Qasim’s companies for development have remained undeveloped for several years. Former President Yameen’s government had decided to reinstate the properties to the state, and to penalize Qasim. However, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s government has remitted the decision and compensated Qasim with millions.
The Tourism Ministry has recently requested the government to reclaim Elaa, Thaa Atoll, an island Qasim acquired in 2006. Some speculate that the government decided to reclaim Elaa as per Qasim’s request. The current Tourism Minister Dr. Abdulla Mausoom is a member of the Jumhooree Party who worked for Qasim’s Villa Company for a number of years.
Qasim is currently attempting to acquire a large lagoon in the Alif Dhaalu Atoll in exchange for Elaa, Thaa Atoll.
