The Employment Tribunal has ordered Maldives National University (MNU) not to appoint a new member of staff as Assistant Professor, the position previously held by Dr. Mohamed Iyaz Abdul Latheef.
Dr. Iyaz was terminated from his position in early July as he showed support for female circumcision. Speaking on the matter, Iyaz claimed he was attempting to speak the truth. He claimed he is not an advocate of female genital mutilation, and extended his apologies if his statements were offensive.
The issue regarding his termination was reported to the Employment Tribunal. During a hearing before the Eid al-Adha holidays, Iyaz requested the Tribunal to issue an order preventing any new appointments to his previous position.
